Loch Ness Monster (Nessie)

First Photograph
This photograph, taken by Hugh Grey on November 12, 1933, is credited with starting the Loch Ness Monster craze. One explanation is that it is a double negative of a labrador with a stick.

Surgeon's Photograph: HOAX
Supposedly taken by gynaecologist Colonel Robert Kenneth Wilson, this photo was published in the Daily Mail on April 21, 1934. It is probably the most famous Nessie photo ever, even though it was found to be a hoax in 1994. Christian Spurling came forth and said that Marmaduke Wetherell had asked him to make the model to go on top of a toy submarine. The hoax was carried out by a small group of people to exact revenge on the Daily Mail, which had fired and publicly humiliated Wetherell for hoaxing Nessie footprints along the loch with a dried hippopotamus foot.

Sir Edward Mountain Expedition
This is a photograph from one of the first monster-spotting expeditions on Loch Ness, led by Sir Edward Mountain in 1934. It is not thought to be very credible.

Humps: HOAX
Staged and photographed by Lachland Stuart, this photograph was taken on July 14, 1951. According to Adrian Shine of the Loch Ness Project,
"The remnants of this hoax were witnessed by local author Richard Faire. He spoke to Lachlan Stuart the next day, who confessed that he had constructed the image from hay bails and tarpaulin. Researchers later recreated the image and found the water where the monster was seen was in reality very shallow.
This didn't stop people from speculating as to how the creature could contort its back in such a way."

Castle Photo
Bank manager Peter MacNab took this photograph on July 29, 1955. According to Adrian Shine,
"This is a huge object. If it were an animal it would be more than 60ft (18m) long, which is colossal. If you think of the amount that would be under the water, it would be a creature of the most improbable proportions.
It could possibly be a portion of a boat wake and if you look behind it you may see a faint line in the water. There may have been some retouching, but the photographer never admitted to a hoax.
Given the improbability of an object of that size, you have to seek alternative hypotheses, but there is no definitive proof that the image is a fake."
